The Blind Cleric
United States v. Rahman (1999)
Charge: Seditious conspiracy (plot to bomb landmarks)Court: U.S. Court of Appeals, Second CircuitState: New YorkDocket: Blowback
The facts
A blind religious scholar is accused of leading a group planning a campaign of violence in a big city. The plans included bombing two road tunnels and a major international building, and killing a foreign head of state during his visit. Members of the group had also helped the men who bombed a large office tower. An informant recorded their meetings. The scholar built no bombs. He says he only gave religious opinions, which is protected free speech. The charge is seditious conspiracy: agreeing to use force against the government.
