The facts

A man bought an old SUV for cash. Prosecutors say he loaded it with homemade explosive and fire-starting devices and parked it in one of the busiest squares in a large city. He tried to set it off, then walked away. It did not explode. Two days later he was arrested at an airport trying to fly abroad. Prosecutors say he took bomb-making training overseas from a militant group and was sent money by a contact there. He faces ten federal charges, the top one attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.
