The Gas Plant Contracts

United States v. Stanley (2008)

Charge: Conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act; conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraudCourt: U.S. District Court for the Southern District of TexasState: TexasDocket: Greasing Palms

The facts

A senior executive of a large engineering and construction company is accused of approving bribes to foreign government officials. Prosecutors say his company hired two consulting firms to pass about $182 million to officials in an African country. The aim was to win four contracts, worth more than $6 billion, to build a natural-gas plant. He is also accused of secretly taking $10.8 million in kickbacks from a consultant the company used on projects around the world. American law bans paying bribes to foreign officials to win business.
