The Wrong Go-Between

United States v. Stone (2019)

Charge: Obstruction of a congressional investigation, false statements to Congress (five counts), witness tamperingCourt: U.S. District Court for the District of ColumbiaState: District of ColumbiaDocket: Cover-Up

The facts

A veteran political consultant testified to a congressional committee looking into leaked emails during an election campaign. He was asked about his contacts with the website that published them. Prosecutors say he lied about who his go-between to the website was, denied messages that existed, and then wrote to the committee naming the wrong man as his source. They also say he pressured that man to back his story, to claim memory loss, or to refuse to testify. The man took the Fifth when subpoenaed. The consultant denies that any of this obstructed the inquiry.
