Group Leaders and a Capitol Riot

United States v. Tarrio et al. (2023)

Charge: Seditious conspiracy (agreeing to use force against the government)Court: U.S. District Court, District of ColumbiaState: District of ColumbiaDocket: True Believers

The facts

The accused led an organized group. After a presidential election, prosecutors say he and four co-defendants planned to stop Congress from certifying the result. He set up a special unit inside the group. On the day of the vote count, the men led members and others in the crowd onto the Capitol grounds. Barriers were pulled down, the building was breached and officers were assaulted. Afterwards the men claimed credit online and in an encrypted chat. The charge requires proof they agreed to oppose, by force, the lawful handover of power.
