The Cargo Terminal Inside Man

United States v. Werner (1980)

Charge: Robbery obstructing interstate commerce and theft of goods from a foreign shipmentCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit (trial court: E.D.N.Y.)State: New YorkDocket: The Heist

The facts

A cargo agent at an airport freight terminal is accused of setting up two thefts from his own employer. In the first, a shipment of foreign currency went missing. In the second, armed men walked into the same terminal and carried out about six million dollars in cash and jewels. Prosecutors say he told the crew where the money was kept, delayed the armoured pickup and timed the raid. He argues the two thefts were too different to be tried together.
