United States v. Williams (1983)
Charge: Bribery, receiving an unlawful gratuity, conflict of interest and conspiracy to defraud the United StatesCourt: U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (on appeal from E.D.N.Y.)State: New YorkDocket: All the President's Men
The facts
Undercover agents set up a fake company and posed as agents for rich foreign investors. They offered a sitting U.S. senator financing for a mining venture in which he held a concealed share. In return he agreed to use his office to get the government to buy the mine's metal. The meetings were recorded on tape and film. He said the agents had lured him into a crime he would never have committed on his own, and that their methods were so unfair the case should have been thrown out.
