Woods v. State (Nathaniel Woods) (2007)

Charge: Capital murder (complicity) - three Birmingham police officers shot while serving a warrantCourt: Alabama Court of Criminal AppealsDocket: Death in Dixie

Was the unarmed man guilty as an accomplice to the shooter's killing of three officers?

The facts

On June 17, 2004, four Birmingham police officers went to an apartment to serve a misdemeanour warrant on a man who had earlier cursed and threatened them. As officers entered, a second man came out of a bedroom with an SKS assault rifle and opened fire, killing three officers and wounding a fourth. The man named in the warrant fired no shot and was unarmed during the shooting. Witnesses said he told the shooter 'another one right there' as an officer appeared at the front door; another witness said he panicked and tried to leave.
